Common to all the projects is an adherence to the tenets of Modernism, a rational method that favors simple and elegant solutions, and a consistent design approach that is responsive to culture and context. Le Corbusier’s quote about humankind’s basic need for space + light + order serves as a starting point for all my design endeavors. Philosophy + Methodology In conversation with potential clients or collaborators, I look for an aesthetic, ideological and personality fit, and complementary interests or skillsets. Instead of providing a purely client driven service, I believe in the power of a two-way dialogue and approaching each new project with a spirit of inquiry. While the selected projects represent a high-end spectrum, smaller scale renovations and millwork projects are within my scope. From time to time, I also collaborate with design firms, contractors and developers. To create homes that accommodate evolving individual, family &amp; societal needs, my design process accounts for future adaptability and sustainability. Optimal outcomes result from an understanding of project complexity, precedent study, and design exploration. Open communication is required to reach design, budget, and scheduling milestones, and to achieve each Client’s unique goals. Successful creative dialogues with clients and collaborators allow for mutual learning and discovery, resulting in beautiful and innovative solutions. Professional Experience A Registered Architect in New York State since 2007, I have completed dozens of drawing sets for co-op board and condo board design review &amp; approval, and building permit application. Over the course of these projects, I gained experience working with local expeditors, the NYC Department of Buildings, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and a vast network of MEP, structural, lighting + AV consultants. Most importantly, I have logged in thousands of hours of site experience, overseeing the construction process and problem-solving in tandem with builders and stakeholders. In addition to the Architect of Record role, space planning, interior design, millwork, furniture &amp; art procurement are within my scope. Eagle Rock is named after a large rock whose shadow resembles an eagle with its wings outstretched. Inspired by Horatio West Court in Santa Monica (Irving Gill Architect, 1919), the massing blends in with single family homes in the neighborhood while maintaining distinct sidewalk accessible entrances to the separate units. 2 interlocking L-shaped units combine to create a central courtyard void for light + air. Strategically designed, the elevations and entrance configurations of this 2000 SF live-work duplex allow for a cohesive architectural composition when 2 duplexes are mirrored along a central exterior circulation spine, resulting in a unified 4 unit configuration on a typical 50’x150’ lot. Due to the home’s siting on a quiet and secure cul-de-sac, street parking (uncommon in LA) is proposed to free up square footage on the lot for domestic habitation. Additional outdoor features include a shallow pool for rainwater collection, a rooftop garden for produce cultivation, roof mounted solar panels, and a terrace next to the courtyard for children’s play, group socializing, and outdoor dining. A vertical stack effect is achieved through the positioning of the central courtyard and operable skylights, and reduces seasonal reliance on Air Conditioning. The continuous grid ceiling system conceals a robust MEP duct system that delivers a high rate of indoor air exchange. Within the City of Los Angeles, minor zoning and land use reforms could factor in these new live-work spatial divisions and facilitate their tax implications. As the city moves to turn more half-basement apartments into legal, safe and affordable housing, Architects have the opportunity to develop new multi family live-work housing typologies. Unlike many city basement apartments which are treated as residual spaces, the half-basement unit in this project interlocks with the upper unit and forms an integral component of the architectural composition. The garden facing exposure is the private zone of the house, allowing light, space + air to permeate the living spaces. For gatherings and parties, the rooftop can be directly accessed via the concrete stair core without entering the interior. The flexible framework allows the occupants to re-order various spatial functions to suit evolving household sizes and needs over time, and adapt to unforeseen external societal and economic shifts. Perhaps Resiliency does not reside in any single solution or concept? The quantity of mechanically recirculated air is reduced through cross ventilation. Additionally, the vertical stack effect minimizes the seasonal reliance on air conditioning and reduces harmful environmental effects. The continuous grid ceiling conceals a robust MEP duct system with the capability to deliver a much higher rate of indoor air exchange than the average residential unit. Public health concerns have ramped up efforts to prevent transmission of airborne infections using environmental controls. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) functions on the premise that the blue spectrum of visible light has anti-microbial properties, and has received renewed interest for residential + commercial applications after decades of underutilization .
